Death Metal Music (2006)

                                                     
"This is a ridiculously one-sided, alarmist documentary which was co-produced by the BBC and the Discovery channel. It focuses on how death metal turns kids into murderous, raping, pillaging maniacs. Two cases are focused on in particular. In one, a group of satan-worshiping metalheads in Milan, Italy kill a couple of their friends. The tabloids in Italy blamed metal, of course, but the father of one of the victims doesn't seem so convinced. Meanwhile, out in California, another girl is killed in a satanic ritual by three more teens who dig metal. The parents in this case are less forgiving, and unsuccessfully sue Slayer in order to get them to stop selling their wares to kids. The doc itself takes a very harsh and judgemental tone towards the music. Also, there are featured interviews with Deicide and others, and a small segment about that Norwegian band that burned all those churches down."

Heavy Metal Britannia (2010)

"Nigel Planer narrates a documentary which traces the origins and development of British heavy metal from its humble beginnings in the industrialised Midlands to its proud international triumph. In the late 60s a number of British bands were forging a new kind of sound. Known as hard rock, it was loud, tough, energetic and sometimes dark in outlook. They didn't know it, but Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and, most significantly, Black Sabbath were defining what first became heavy rock and then eventually heavy metal. Inspired by blues rock, progressive rock, classical music and high energy American rock, they synthesised the sound that would inspire bands like Judas Priest to take metal even further during the 70s. By the 80s its originators had fallen foul of punk rock, creative stasis or drug and alcohol abuse. But a new wave of British heavy metal was ready to take up the crusade. With the success of bands like Iron Maiden, it went global. Interspersed with actual footage shot by the fraternity brothers on the night of the incident, including the sexual acts. "In the mid-70s, surfers from Venice-Santa Monica who hung out at the Zephyr Surf Shop would skateboard when the surf was quiet. Over the course of a few heady years, riding on polyurethane wheels and copying the surfing moves of Larry Bertleman, the Z-Boys invent and polish their style on a hilly street near the shop, on the asphalt slopes ringing school playgrounds, and then in swimming pools empty during California's drought. The Z-Boys astound upright skateboarders at the 1975 championship in Del Mar. Within a year, the team splinters as some players join better financed pro teams. The film ends with profiles of the stars, Jay Adams, Stacy Peralta, and Tony Alva."
