Killer in a Small Town: The Ipswich Murders (2008)

"For years, prostitutes in Ipswich had worked the streets around the football stadium. Many of them were feeding drug habits and their activity was largely ignored. But all that was to change in the winter of 2006 when, one by one, the working girls of Ipswich began to disappear. The first to go missing was 19-year-old Tania Nicol. Her mother called the police, but they failed to track her down. Then, two weeks later, 25-year-old Gemma Adams was reported missing by her boyfriend. It was only then that her parents realised she was working the streets. With two women missing from the same red light district, the police investigation began to escalate. When the bodies were found, both washed clean of DNA evidence but bearing signs of strangulation, it became clear that a serial killer was at work. It would take three more deaths before he was stopped. When Steve Wright was arrested for the crimes and subsequently found guilty it caused shockwaves, not least among the group of working girls who knew him as a former punter."

Johnny Cash in San Quentin (1969)

Director:
Michael Darlow

Runtime: 51 min

"Produced originally for Granada TV in the UK, the film follows Johnny Cash, et al, through the performance. Key moments with June Carter and Carl Perkins are featured, and Cash's inimitable stage presence can reach through 40 years and a TV screen to electrify you.

Still, the most haunting images from the documentary include interviews with prisoners at San Quentin, many of whom are in prison for life or longer. Interviews focus on topics that result in the men discussing facing the gas chamber or trying to visit with their family members. The disenfranchisement and dehumanization of the prisoners becomes less apparent as they talk about growing up in poverty and living with severe guilt for the wrongs they've done.

Then it cuts back to Cash singing "San Quentin," like he knows what he's talking about. His head cocked back, a half-grin crawls across his face. "San Quentin," he sings, "May you rot and burn in hell," and the men you just watched lamenting on their wives hoot and whistle, hollar and scream like it's all they have left. After the song, ever the smart aleck, Cash says, "If the guards are still speaking to me, can I have a glass of water?" Naturally, a guard complies, so Cash plays the song again."

Twist of Faith (2004)

Director:
Kirby Dick

Runtime: 85 min

"The film focuses on Tony Comes, a firefighter from Toledo, Ohio, who was first sexually abused by a Catholic priest when he was a fourteen-year-old student at a Catholic high school. Feeling ashamed, Comes kept his secret for nearly 20 years but was forced to confront his past after discovering that the priest, Dennis Gray, was living on the same street as Comes, his wife, and their two young children. Comes decided to go public and bring a lawsuit against the priest as well as the Church officials who had neglected to take action despite years of complaints. The filmmakers gave Comes and his wife camcorders which they used to record many of the film's scenes. The film also features interviews with several other men who had been abused by Gray, and these survivors reunite to discuss their continuing struggles."
